Impressions of Digley: Quiet Lanes — Wild Moorlands

This collection of drawings and paintings was the product of a year spent rambling around Digley reservoir and the surrounding moorlands. Sketching my way along rugged moorland paths, sitting under the shade of woodland trees and capturing the joy of just being in the landscape.

QUIET LANES — DRAMATIC MOORLANDS

Connecting With The Landscape

Having explored Digley as a young boy, this collection of work is a rediscovery inspired by becoming immersed once more in its quiet lanes and dramatic moorlands, showing the change in perspective borne out of memory, experience, and ever-changing nature.

Drawing in the open air, I quickly capture the moment using ink and homemade tools before developing the work further with ink, acrylic and watercolour. Inspired by both impressionistic and more modern techniques, I use atmospheric effects to bottle up the light, the seasons and weather.

These rambles through Digley’s paths, moors and woodlands are the story of a place and its history, and of finding a newfound appreciation for the landscape of my youth.
