About
There is something really exhilarating about being out in a landscape alone, sketching a true impression as I ramble. I always stay faithful to the untamed character of my original sketches, embracing small mistakes and letting the wildness of nature shine through.
Meet Fritz
For those of you who don’t know me or are new to my style of work, let me give you an overview of why and how I sketch and paint.
To me, nature plays a fascinating role in changing the landscape; surviving and evolving. Documenting what I observe, expressed not in words but in drawings of walls, gates, trees and hills.
My passion for the forgotten history of a place moves me to find those lost lanes, pathways and buildings that once shaped communities and the lives of their inhabitants. My desire to share these places with others, by attributing “what3words”, to each piece of work, provides the viewer with a location to explore further.
I make extensive trips, sometimes over several years, to an area to capture the changing colours of the landscape for my projects. Disappointed when I get there and the light is against me; elated and excited when it illuminates my subject matter.
I make tools from broken twigs that nature has left behind, fashioning them using my trusty penknife. Drawing with these homemade implements encourages bold mark making and gives life and energy to the finished artwork.
To me, whether the drawing is in black and white or colour is purely down to the subject matter and the memories it evokes. After all, who has not said “this reminds me of...”?
