Walking down the canal towpath towards Saddleworth Viaduct and Lime Kiln Lock (23W) on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towards Uppermill. All footpaths lead to coffee and cake and the smell of freshly roasted coffee from the Lime Kiln Cafe at Dobcross beckons.
Lime Kiln Lock (23W) has single upper and double lower gates and is grooved for stop planks with a boatman's ladder inserted in one wall dating from the 1984 canal restoration. The walls are hammer-dressed stone and have several stonemason's marks. The bridge at the lower end of the lock has an elliptical arch and has a stone band parapet wall with round-topped copings.
This is the first in a series of drawings of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Diggle Flight of locks.
